Slow Cooker Apple Butter

MMMMM…. Nothing smells like fall more than Apple Butter! Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year. The colors of the leaves change to orange, red and yellow. Football season is here, I get to finally wear my favorite outfit of jeans, sweater and boots! And of course, everything consists of apples.

My favorite fall activities are climbing the trees at Carters Mtn, located in Charlottesville Virginia, picking your own apples and eating them while walking through the orchards. Attending fall festivals in the Appalachian mountains, listening to folk music and eating everything made with apple butter.

Apple butter is perfect on a biscuit, but it’s also DELICIOUS on toast, waffles, pancakes & ice-cream! YES… you read that right… Ice-Cream. It’s the perfect gift to give to neighbors and the different recipes that include apple butter are endless. I love to make apple butter pies, cookies & donuts!

Enjoy!

Slow Cooker Apple Butter

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs mixed apples peeled & cored – my favorites are Granny Smith & Honeycrisp
  • 3 cups sugar divided
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cloves

Instructions

  • Peel, core & cut apples. Place into a crock pot & pour 1 1/2 cups of sugar all over. Cover & cook on High for 5 hours.
  • Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves & the remaining 1 1/2 cups of sugar. Turn down the crock pot setting to low, cover & cook for an additional 3-4 hours.
  • Place half of apple mixture into a blender, secure lid well & remove the center piece on lid to allow steam to escape. Place a clean towel over opening. Pulse until smooth, repeat with remaining apple mixture. Cool completely!
