Cheese Ring Appetizer
This cheese ring appetizer is one of my go-to recipes for large family get-togethers. I always make it for Thanksgiving. If your family is like mine, before they arrive, food is on their minds. While they wait for the big feast to begin, I throw out some appetizers for snacking. This cheese ring is the one snack they gravitate to first.
Who Began Serving Appetizers?
The name appetizers comes from the French phrase hors d’oeuvres, meaning “outside of the masterpiece.” The English created the term appetizer in 1860.
Appetizers began as a means to stimulate people’s appetite before the main course. As with many other traditions, the Ancient Greeks and Romans started the practice of serving appetizers. They offered fruits, olives, cured meats, and cheeses to their guests while they socialized.
Cheese Ring Appetizer
I was first introduced to this cheese ring recipe by my cousin. She catered for a living, so I turned to her for a tasty appetizer for a gathering. She recommended this cheese ring.
I was a little skeptical at first. Who eats cheese with strawberry preserves? I made it anyway, and it did not disappoint! The preserves bring a sweetness to the tanginess of the sharp cheddar. You think you’ll just eat one cracker’s worth and find yourself wolfing down three or four.
Ingredients
- Grated sharp Cheddar cheese (I prefer grating the cheese by hand instead of buying preshredded cheese)
- Chopped pecans
- Chopped Green onions
- Worcestershire sauce
- Minced Garlic
- Mayonnaise
- Strawberry Preserves
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Bundt pan
- Serving tray
Instructions
Combine the cheese, pecans, onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and mayonnaise. Spray the bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray. Press the cheese mixture into the bundt pan, spreading it evenly. Place in the refrigerator to chill for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Remove from fridge, and carefully slide a spatula along the edges to loosen the cheese. Dump ring onto a serving tray. Spoon preserves into the middle of the ring. Serve with crackers.
